About Englander
Founded in 1894, Englander Sleep Products is the second oldest national manufacturer of quality sleep products in the United States. The name and product was first established by Max Englander from New York, the company's founder. Many years later, he sold the company to the Ira Pink family in Chicago who was one of the all-time great bedding merchants. Under Pink's direction, Englander became a highly recognizable name, merchandising latex from their showroom which was the whole 17th floor of the Chicago merchandise mart. In the late 1960's, Union Carbide acquired the brand and further strengthened the name through extensive national advertising. In 1970, the Englander trademark was subsequently purchased by the United States Bedding Company, St. Paul, Minnesota. Through nine national plants, a national marketing staff, a team of regional sales managers and representatives, the penetration of the Englander name became an accomplished fact. Englander Sleep Products has always been an innovator within the industry. It was the first to introduce the continuous coil unit and first to price twin and full sets separately. In late 1979, Englander was sold to the Van Vorst Company of Pasadena, California. In 1985, Schottenstein Stores Corporation of Columbus, Ohio, purchased the Englander name and its trademarks. The corporation hired Roger Jasperson as president. Roger brought more than 30 years bedding experience to Englander and since then, Englander has grown to more than 15 manufacturing and distribution centers, including four international locations. Englander passed an industry milestone in 1994 when it celebrated its 100th Anniversary. Later that year, Englander vaulted into Furniture/Today's Top 10 Bedding Manufacturers list. Two years later, Englander moved up to 7th position. In 1995, Englander reintroduced the popular 100% pure, natural rubber Laytex™ mattress. This 100% pure natural core was named "LAYTEX™" mattress to note the difference between Englander's product and the many synthetic products. Once again, Englander was a leader in revitalizing an area of the industry that had fallen dormant. Many manufacturers are following with synthetic blends but Englander is 100% pure natural rubber. Then in 1997, Englander was one of only four manufacturers to receive a "very good" rating in an independent test calculated by a leading consumer magazine. In 1999, Englander combined the best of all its products in a new program - The 21st Century Sleep Systems. Moreover, Englander achieved 6th position in the bedding industry's Top 10 Companies, an over 26% growth rate making Englander the industry's fastest growing bedding company. Known for innovative products, outstanding dealer support programs and a strong marketing focus, Englander has truly become "an American sleeping tradition" and is the premium "mattress of choice!" |
